Independent journalist Nilanjana Bhowmick has released her first non-fiction book, Lies Our Mothers Told Us: The Indian Woman’s Burden, which brings attention to the lives of middle-class Indian women that are ingrained in the duality of tradition and modernity with structural inequalities.
Published on July 5 2022, by Aleph Book Company, in the book Bhowmick uses available data and anecdotal evidence from the real lives of Indian women across the country to ask if, in our patriarchal society, the assertion that ‘women can have it all’ comes at a high price.

Nilanjana Bhowmick is a Delhi-based independent journalist. As a journalist for more than twenty-one years, she has won three international awards for her reports on gender and development.
She began her career as a producer for the BBC Asian Network in Birmingham and was the correspondent for TIME magazine’s South Asia bureau in New Delhi.
Her non-fiction work, poetry, and short stories have appeared in several international anthologies.
